What is Autism?

Autism is a neurological disorder that affects, often severely, a persons ability to communicate and socially interact with others. Children with Autism may have delay in fine motor skills, tantrum frequently, and have difficulty coping with change. It is Four times more prevalent in males than females.

Currently, Autism is believed to affect 1 in every 110 people and 1 in every 70 boys. The rate of people being diagnosed with autism has increased substantially over the past two decades. Although this may be due part to improved diagnostic techniques and to the change in criteria for autism spectrum disorders, the majority of experts agree these changes are not enough to explain the epidemic rates at which autism is being diagnosed.

Due to the positive response to early intervention, we now have the opportunity to make a tremendous impact on individuals and our society. The lifetime net financial cost savings per individual who receives early intervention can be 2 million dollars. The improved quality of life for individuals with autism and their families is immeasurable.
